The problem

The cheapest revenue in a store is the order that’s already happening. A shopper who has reached checkout has done all the hard parts — chosen, trusted, entered a card. Offering them one relevant addition at that moment converts far better than any amount of work spent acquiring a new visitor.

Most of the tooling that does this asks for something disproportionate in return: replace your checkout with a funnel builder. That means handing over the one page in the store that must not break, to get a feature that should be additive.

What UpsellBay does

UpsellBay adds offers to the WooCommerce journey a store already has, rather than replacing it:

  • Four native placements — product page add-ons, cart cross-sells, checkout bumps before the place-order button, and follow-on offers on the receipt.
  • Classic and Block Checkout, both through official WooCommerce extension points. The checkout, payment flow, and theme are untouched.
  • Server-side discount recalculation — percentage off, fixed amount off, or a fixed offer price. The math happens on the server, so a manipulated request can’t buy a product at the discount price without the bump.
  • Ten targeting rules — cart contents, category, tag, subtotal, viewed product, user role, order count, lifetime spend, stock status, and exclusions — combined with match-all or match-any, and a priority number to settle which offer wins a placement.
  • Draft, active, and paused states plus a test mode, so an offer can be previewed in its real placement before any shopper sees it.
  • Aggregate-only analytics — views, accepts, dismissals, attributed revenue, and discount spend, rolled up daily. No customer PII is stored.

Built to WordPress standards (WordPress 6.6+, WooCommerce 9.0+, PHP 8.0+), HPOS-compatible, GPL-licensed, and free on WordPress.org. The Pro edition adds checkout bumps, the advanced targeting rules, and attribution analytics.

The constraint that shaped it

Every design decision came back to the same rule: the checkout is not mine to break.

That ruled out the approaches that would have been easier. No template overrides, no replacing the checkout page, no intercepting the order flow — only the extension points WooCommerce publishes for exactly this purpose. It costs flexibility, and it’s the reason the plugin can be installed on a store mid-season without a staging rehearsal.

The same rule drove the performance budget: assets load only on pages where an offer is actually active, and the placement reserves its layout space so an arriving offer doesn’t shift the page under someone’s thumb while they’re reaching for the pay button.

Where it is

Released August 2026 and in active development. Install numbers are small and stated plainly on the listing — it’s a new plugin without a marketing push behind it yet, and the interesting part of this project isn’t its adoption curve, it’s that the whole free-plus-Pro product exists: scoped, built, documented, reviewed onto WordPress.org, and supported.
